Cornell University embraces diversity and seeks candidates who will contribute to a climate that supports students, faculty and staff of all identities and backgrounds. We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented and/or marginalized identities to apply.
Who We Are:
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University’s second largest college. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education, and outreach. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: natural and human systems; food, energy, and environmental resources; and social, physical, and economic well-being.
As the only horticulture department in the Ivy League, our faculty, staff and students are working to shape the food systems and landscapes of today and for the future. Our faculty includes more than 40 scientists working across New York to make discoveries and share knowledge about fruits, vegetables, and landscape plants. They are called on by farmers, golf course managers, urban foresters, government officials and many others to solve problems around the globe.
What You Will Do:
The Extension Support Specialist will focus on educating New York State’s turfgrass managers on the latest research regarding sustainable management of turfgrass systems. The majority of outreach will be aimed at New York State Park golf course managers. This includes on-site visits to assess course conditions, data collection in-situ, review of pesticide and fertilizer records, and discussions with managers, all of which are needed to formulate recommendations for future management. Additional outreach includes the development and improvement of digital resources for the benefit of turf managers in the form of website updates and maintaining a social media presence.
The Extension Support Specialist will also be required to assist in the Cornell Turfgrass Program’s research projects in an administrator role. Establish project timelines, organize support labor, and advise graduate researchers. It will be required for the individual to understand the framework of each research project to provide support.
This is a one-year position with the possibility of extension based on funding and successful performance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree; with 2-4 years' experience with Golf Turf Management or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Previous experience with program evaluation tools
- Excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication and organizational skills required.
- Demonstrated ability to work well with a variety of diverse audiences.
- Experience that demonstrates sound judgement, creativity, management and problem-solving skills, and ability to work well within a team of professionals.
- Ability to plan ahead and anticipate potential issues, strong ability for multi-tasking.
- Strong computer skills including webpage management, excel, power point, and Microsoft office.
- Effective problem-solving skills and ability to change program objectives as needed.
- Must be able to work under general supervision.
- Must be able to meet the travel requirements of the position (4-6 weeks per year) and have and maintain a valid NYS driver’s license.
If you possess these experiences and skills this may be the role for you! There is one other qualification that we would view as incredibly helpful in this role, to include:
Prior experience with outreach and program management
